I am new to the world of singing and need some advice on promoting myself and finding gigs. I have been taking voice lessons and feel ready to try myself out on stage. I have a pretty good voice and musical ear, a decent appearance, and a charming foreign accent. My repertoire consists mostly of torch songs, sultry songs (Marlene Dietrich style), standards, some showtunes, and a limited number of classical pieces (like Habanera from Carmen and such).
Now what? Do I need an audio sample of myself singing? Do I send that sample to restaurants, lounge bars, websites, etc.? How do I make that audio sample if it is needed? Should I just keep going to piano bars in hopes to get some information or even get noticed there? How do I find a band or an accompanist?
Any help will be appreciated. I know how to promote myself in my primary work but I have no idea how to do it with singing? I don't even know what things would be considered faux pas and what things would never bring any results.
Thank you kindly,
Paulina

Re: Advice Needed on Finding Gigs/Auditions
Tue, April 3, 2007 - 10:55 AMTalk with your voice teacher - they may do a showcase for their students a few times each year.
The torch songs/standards would work well at Martuni's open mic (first Sunday of each month) in SF (corner of Valencia and Market).
Audio samples are always good - but can be expensive.
If you want representation by an agent, you'll need a good headshot and a resume (even if it doesn't have much performing on it).
Check Craigslist (under gigs) too.
But Martuni's will be a good place to start.

Re: Advice Needed on Finding Gigs/Auditions
Mon, April 9, 2007 - 7:54 PMI see you're in the Bay Area. So am I. Here's my advice... make your scene. We have put together some of the most outrageously silly shows ever in the last couple of years, and now people come of some of the performers get called for other things. If you put something together with a band or an accompaniest that's a little different, the Bay Area will be pretty kind to you.
And now for an example and a plug... Next week, "Everything's A Dollar In This Box - Tom Waits on Cheap Instruments" at the 21 Grand Friday and Saturday night. :)
